I've been looking for a good data translation and migration tool for use on both static and dynamic data - I often have these issues with my Enterprise Transformation projects. I confess, I still think that Excel and my collection of MS Access scripts are good for many jobs, but today I saw a demo of a really good special purpose tool for 'Extract Transform and Load' activities - and it's open source! The tool is from an outfit called Talend - they have commercial versions and consulting services too.

For simple and straightforward data translations like you describe, there are some really nice ETL tools on the market. But an ETL tool is often not the right solution - especially when the conversion involves legacy systems, multiple systems, home-grown file structures, high data volumes, extremely aggressive timelines, lack of system knowledge, etc. In these cases, an ETL solution becomes a complex, programmer-driven exercise. UCT is a company that specializes in complex data conversions. Its solution is driven by business experts (not programmers) - many with 20 years of conversion experience. We have a tool that creates conversion code directly from business rules that are entered the business experts. We have a methodology that has been used successfully on 100s of complex conversions. Larry, thanks for your helpful comment - I agree with your point, and OK, it's a sales message, but a good solution in this area would solve many ERP Project Management problems! Hope you have that solution.
